Heller, Introduction: Study on simultaneous contrast
Heller | Introduction
The excerpt for the Study on Simultaneous Contrast is taken from the first 4 bars of piano study no. 15 of Stephen Heller's Opus 45, the Warrior’s Song.
The constitutive elements of this fragment are: a bass on the pitch class D—that is played on each upbeat—and half-note chords played on the downbeat. These alternate with the bass and contrast with the resonance created by the pedal of the piano.
We created and recorded four re-orchestrations first with the original tutti, then tutti without percussion, then by each family: woodwind, brass, percussion, strings. The tables below each version show the distribution of these constituent elements by instrumental families.
Additionally, in order to be able to navigate with ease through the recordings when offline, a MAX patch has been created which allows the user to choose the sound files, display the scores and use them to make their own mixes. Email the webmaster to get a copy the Max/MSP patch.
