Tchaikovsky, Introduction: Study of Balance

Tchaikovsky | Introduction

An excerpt from the beginning of the development of the first movement of Tchaikovsky's 5th symphony, mm. 214-255. This fragment, in which two of the main themes are superimposed, raises crucial questions about the simultaneous string-woodwind balance. We proposed four versions of reorchestration:

  1. Original (or almost, as we only had two horns)

  2. Version with modified nuances and changes woodwind articulations (in order to assess the influence of the articulations on the balance)

  3. Version with reinforced woodwinds.

  4. Full exchange: The strings and the woods exchange their respective materials.

Orchestrations by:

  • Student : Léo Albisetti

  • HEM Supervisor : Victor Cordero
