Room Mics, Ex. B, Two Violinists

TOR / ODESSA Montreal / Subject 1 / Anatomy of a Mix / Room Mics / Example B

From the back of the hall, does it sound like one or two violinists? Unlike the image captured by the Decca Tree, the diffuse sound of the room system gives the impression of pulling towards the right side of the auditory image, where there is more reflective activity in the hall. While large differences in bowing are still audible, small phrasing differences are effectively erased. Even an errant pizzicato note, present from all other perspectives, becomes a smear of itself from this distance.
