Decca Tree, Ex. B, Two Violinists
TOR / ODESSA Montreal / Subject 1 / Anatomy of a Mix / Decca Tree / Example B
The Decca Tree mimics the perspective of an outsider looking into the orchestra. This sense of depth is nonexistent in the extremely close contact microphones, nor is the room as present from the spot mic's perspective. The jetting sensation in the auditory image seems to be lessened in comparison to the concertmaster alone, as the two violins together anchor the source localization to the left of center. With room interaction, the dark and bright tone characteristics of both instruments now blend together rather than being quite as distinct as they were in closer microphone positions. As discussed previously, the concertmaster's instrument sounds the brightest in this particular array.
