Transforming Stream Integration:
Rimsky-Korsakov, Snegourotchka, Rehearsal 137
In his treatise on orchestration, Rimsky-Korsakov gives this example of a “transference of passages and phrases.” This is what is perceived as a transforming stream—where “[t]he melody is transferred from the violins to the flute and clarinet” (p. 108). The excerpt is from Snegourotchka, at Rehearsal 137. The line moves between combinations of instruments (see ODESSA 2 and the accompanying orchestration analysis).
