Domains of Timbre
By Anonymous Timbral Domains
Having been exposed to music since childhood, I have heard of the word 'timbre' since... "forever" but never really understood what it meant. I have always been fascinated by how different musical instruments could elicit different emotions/feelings despite them playing the same notes at the same pitch and intensity, without realizing that this WAS related to timbre! Now in university, I knew I wanted to do a research thesis but on what??? I knew i wanted to stay in the field of psychology, more specifically in cognition and perception, but that was still a bit vague. Scrolling through all the cognition and perception labs of my university, a little spark lit up. Why not merge that hobby, that interest in music that i have had for sooo long with my other interest, i.e, with what i have been learning in university now as a psychology major. Hence here i am, a beginner in the domain of timbre, doing my research on affect and music surrounded by timbre geeks. I still have so much to learn in the domain but i am looking forward to do so!
